Lillian and the most infectious smile in Northern Uganda

Meet Lillian: an inspiring entrepreneur who’s changing her life with a small loan.

  • “KATI means ‘coming out’ in local Luo language”

  • The KATI programme is reinventing vocational training in Pader, Uganda by nurturing a group of young entrepreneurs to find innovative ways to grow their businesses.

  • Lillian heard about the programme on local radio. She was one of 100 to go through an innovation bootcamp, and then one of the final 20 selected to receive a loan of around £1,000 and a mentor to support her along the way.

Lillian’s been able to run her business very well. She’s very persistent. The government health centre in her sub-county is almost dysfunctional, so people always die from easily treatable diseases. Lillian thought - I can use my raw skills to save a few lives. So she came up with the idea of starting a drugstore and testing centre.

Lillian’s not only happy, she’s excited. She hopes to go back to school and become a fully enrolled nurse. She wants to turn her drugstore into a hospital in the future. – Donnas, KATI Leader and Lillian’s mentor
